Why do I grow dahlias?
A dinner plate dahlia was my first big ‘Wow, look what I’ve grown’ flower, and my
obsession with them just grew and grew.

From tubers
Dahlias are from the warmer climate of Mexico and grow from tubers, a little similar to a potato. These are my tubers in the autumn, I label them up when they are in flower, because dahlia tubers look very similar. In autumn the tubers are stored ready for planting in the spring.
To pots
In April just as the frosts are coming to an end I plant all my dahlia tubers into plots and shelter them in the greenhouse of cold frames, I can’t move for tubers at the last count I had 120. Once the dahlias have grow a good set of leaves they are put out into the plot.
To bloom
At the end of July, the start of August the first sets of dahlias begin to bud and bloom. It’s a glorious site and the more you cut the more they come. Dahlias are at their best throughout August and September and can last until the end of October depending on when the first frost arrives.
“When given as a gift, the dahlia flower expresses sentiments of dignity and elegance. It is also the symbol of a commitment and bond that lasts forever.”
