Flowers out of season
What happens when the flowers you want are out of season in Britain or not available from the plot?
Jaci started as a florist using flowers and foliage from New Covent Garden Flower Market, the flower market in London is a glorious place and it definitely makes many florists feel like a kid in a candy store when they go there. It has some amazing British Grown flowers as well as flowers from Holland, Columbia and South Africa.
Since moving to Nottinghamshire the distance to many flower markets is quite a trek. Growing is where Jaci’s love of flowers started and the more she worked with flowers grown at the plot and developed her natural organised wild style, the more she found she enjoyed working with British Flowers and in 2019 joined Flowers From the Farm, a collective of flower farmers and growers in the UK with a heart in improving developing the British cut-flower industry.
Flowers and foliage grown in Britain are as beautiful as any other, however they are very much seasonal some having a short window of availability. One thing that British flower growers and markets do is stretch the length of the season using polytunnels and allowing for access to different growers in warmer regions such as Kent and Cornwall, so flowers become available earlier than their natural season. In order to ensure my brides don’t feel restricted I will use different sources to find flowers.
Choosing your wedding flowers or flowers for an event
When choosing the style of flowers for your wedding or event, we always try to encourage looking at shape and colour, rather than a particular flower. Our ethos is to take natural flowers and organise them for the event, keeping the natural flow and colour to compliment and lift the overall style you’ve chosen.
So as to not limit choice, the flowers and foliage used in our work is either grown at the plot, from another local British flower grower or from a wholesaler (Using British wholesalers where possible). The Little Flower Plot is small, and it is rare I can provide 100% of the flowers and foliage for an entire event, due to the demand out striping supply. This is particularly noteworthy where foliage is concerned.
